Having issues when I start most graphical programs. Simply just says
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
I can confirm that /etc/fonts/fonts.conf
exists and has the correct permissions.
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5497 Jan 16 09:55 fonts.conf
I’m not getting any other information associated with this error, and searching hasn’t provided any helpful information either.
What can I do to fix this?
running gedit, geany, chromium-browser, firefox, libreoffice…
Basically any graphical program that uses fonts
EDIT
using strace
i’ve found the problem stems from here:
access("/data/jenkins/pms-deps-universal/BUILD_TAG/linux-ubuntu-i686/output/pms-depends-linux-ubuntu-i686-release-8400c3b/etc/fonts/fonts.conf", R_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
write(2, "Fontconfig error: ", 18Fontconfig error: ) = 18
write(2, "Cannot load default config file", 31Cannot load default config file) = 31
I’ve never used Jenkins before, I’ll try removing it and see what happens
sudo apt-get purge jenkins
This returns that jenkins is not installed…
I don’t even have a /data/
partition.
How can I change the path for Fontconfig?

The configuration files which belong to /etc/fonts are present in the package and dpkg knows about them: $ dpkg -L fontconfig-config /. /etc /etc/fonts /etc/fonts/fonts.dtd /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d /etc/fonts/conf.d/unhinted.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/autohint.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/sub-pixel.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/yes-bitmaps.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/no-sub-pixel.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/no-bitmaps.conf /usr /usr/share /usr/share/doc /usr/share/doc/fontconfig-config /usr/share/doc/fontconfig-config/README.gz /usr/share/doc/fontconfig-config/AUTHORS /usr/share/doc/fontconfig-config/copyright /usr/share/doc/fontconfig-config/changelog.gz /usr/share/doc/fontconfig-config/changelog.Debian.gz /usr/share/man /usr/share/man/man5 /usr/share/man/man5/fonts-conf.5.gz However, for some reason, they are not present on the filesystem after installation of the package. The files from /usr/share are installed correctly. For now, I extracted the config files from the *.deb manually as a workaround. Michal

Fontconfig error
#1
Post
by Wed » 2006-03-08 01:18
I am using the diskettes to install directly from the net. Thus I guess downloaded files check out ok.
Even so, I get this message on various places during setting up after unpacking:
Code: Select all
Fontconfig error: cannot load default config file
Am I the only one? I have seen no other entrys like this.

Do apt-get install fontconfig. If that package is already installed, then do dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig.

Thanks, the reconfigure went through with no errors.
I’m a bit puzzled about why it happened during install though

My keyboard layout is set to ‘sv’ already, but Swedish characters will not work.
I get XKB-config error trying to chose a different variant of layout in Gnome ‘keyboard layout’ None of the variants show Swedish characters in preview.
Is it impossible to get Swedish characters to work in Debian stable?

I belive x uses «se» to denote swedish and «sv» refers to sami.
Console wants LC_CTYPE=sv_SE and gnome will override either, possibly at login even (which would seem reasonable as you might use local characters for your password) I think it depends on what locales you’ve generated.
(Not much of an answer perhaps but I’ve neen using a swedish keymap since pre woody so I know it works and as I remember it the sarge install asks you about that right after language and everything just works from there).

Your reply makes sense, sort of.
I do know that «se latin1» once was to be used for Swedish. And that other distros use «sv» for Swedish layout. Things llike that makes a nervous guy very annoyed.
I am almost certain that sv is to be used for Swedish, still, I won’t put my head on it.
And yes, the installer do ask for it in the beginning. I however, want to go through the install of system in English. Language and keyboard layout is asked for slightly later in the same install.
For some reason those features seem interlocked somehow. A new install today, and I lived through the install in Swedish. Åäö seems to work …
Not sure if the problem should be marked solved or not.

When I asked this question, I installed another system.
Last night as I did the one I am typing from right now, I chose Swedish right from the beginning. Apart from the frequent «Unknown scancode xxx», it was a smooth ride.
Now my Swedish characters work flawlessly.
BUT!
The system is now in Swedish, the nano editor is in Swedish, Error messages, program titles, config scripts, is a blend of Swedish where the English isn’t yet translated. Really ugly.
All I want to accomplish is to have a English system, preferably UK over US, to be controlled by me via a Swedish keyboard.
But it will have to do, I am well on my way solving the smaller issues.

I have same fontconfig problem.
Everytime I start app from terminal I will get that message «fontconfig error: cannot load default config file»
Some apps have very odd fonts, but most apps have monospace fonts.
I have tried dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig and I have fontconfig and other needed packages installed.. Still it wont work

Try
dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config
allows you to select autohinting, subpixel rendering, bitmap fonts.

Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file [solved]
Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
Linux Mint 19.1 with all updates. Running a GTK based program that works with small amounts of data then fails with this error message for large amounts of data. The data listed on the screen is mostly directory and file names. That is the only data that changes between a working execution and a failed execution.
When the program works, all the data is displayed with the default font. When the program fails, the display shows square boxes indicating characters that cannot be displayed. The command line box shows the error message. Every character is shown as an error, not just weird characters that might not appear in the default font.
All the directory and file names appear ok in the command line display and in Nemo.
Searches find nothing for the error under GTK. The error message is listed for Gentoo, Ubuntu, and other distributions of Linux but only back in 2012. The «solutions» do not match up to anything in LM 19.1.

Thank you for the reinstall line. Much easier to follow compared to the 2012 posts. Unfortunately it did not change anything.
I did find another solution. The code uses an opendir for every directory and leaves them open until the code finishes with them. I changed the code to close the directories earlier. There might be a dozen open instead of a hundred. The display no longer breaks.
Memory usage is down only a small bit from 44MB to 41MB so it is not memory. It must be some weird error in opendir that tramples over something else, in this case the GTK application code.

Re: Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file [solved]
Post

My code opened a directory, read the entries, and processed each one immediately.
If an entry is a subdirectory, the code opened the subdirectory immediately.
If an entry is a file, the code opened the file to process the file.
I changed the code to read all the entries from a directory into a list, close the directory, then process the list.
At any one time, there would only be one directory or one file open. All the other files and directories are just entries in the list.
I made one list for directories and one for files. That let me work through all the directories first to gather the file names. I could then process the files and, perhaps, put the file processing out into threads.

You can also try to use solutions mention here
Hmm it doesn’t really help much. I tried to reinstall it by using npm install —build-from-source canvas but it just keep failing. If i try to use npm rebuild nothing changes. Also updating the node-gyp but still nothing changed
@Veinify this seems to be a super late reply, but maybe you already solved it. I solved it by typing the command:
apt-get install fontconfig
Node-Canvas requires this package to do text writing. With installing that package the config file is automatically generated unter /etc/fonts and everything works after a restart.
Hope you have a great day,
David

Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file #18
I am using one of the prebuilt binaries in my project and am trying to draw text over a video file.
I am executing the process using a complex command in the form of a String[] instead of converting an ArrayList to a one command string. I had to do this to allow for the use of complex filters as having single or double quotes in a single string command doesn’t work.
The binaries compiled claim to include libfreetype and libfribidi. The documentation for drawtext (http://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-filters.html#drawtext-1) says that libfontconfig also needs to be included to enable the font feature and the default font fallback feature.
This seems like a catch 22 as if you don’t want include a font, ffmpeg has no way of falling back to a default.
Can you let me know if libfontconfig should be included and if not, would it be possible to make a prebuilt binary with it enabled? (I’d do it myself but am having trouble compiling)
Here is the shell output:
I/System.out﹕[Parsed_drawtext_0 @ 0xb5864420] Could not load font «(null)»: invalid argument
I/System.out﹕ Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file
I/System.out﹕ [Parsed_drawtext_0 @ 0xb5864420] Cannot find a valid font for the family Sans

Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file #2675
Which operating system does the issue occur on?
Clear Linux
If on linux, are you using X11 or Wayland?
It take really long time to start alacritty in X11,
Alacrritty won’t start in Wayland

What’s the output of alacritty —version? How did you installed alacritty?
@kchibisov
Its: alacritty 0.3.3 (f49350f)
I installed it with cargo install —git https://github.com/jwilm/alacritty
Huh, my first guess would have been incompatibility with fontconfig, but if you’ve compiled it yourself that shouldn’t be the case.
Do you have any system fontconfig setup? My best guess would be that clear linux is doing something odd here.
I did not change anything. How can I check my fontconfig?
You can check if you have the /etc/fonts folder with the conf.avail and conf.d directories and the fonts.conf and fonts.dtd files. I think those should be there on all distros.
Your own configuration should be in .config/fontconfig/ . Your system configuration should be in /etc/fonts , however you can query all configs, that are in use/presented with fc-conflist ( + — is used, — — not in use). Could you try reading the output of fc-list , maybe it’s also throwing some errors here?

Does anyone know how can I resolve this issue?
I’m using ffmpeg on Windows 7. I’ve downloaded ffmpeg from ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds
This is what I entered and what came up:
c:ffmpegbin>ffmpeg -i in.mts -vf "drawtext=fontfile=/usr/share/fonts/truetype/DroidSans.ttf: timec
ode='09:57:00:00': r=25: x=(w-tw)/2: y=h-(2*lh): fontcolor=white: box=1: boxcolor=0x00000000@1"
-an -y out.avi
