Recent Stretch 9.8.0 Gnome DVD, via Transmission (torrent) for my GF’s old ASUS laptop: I noted that my Verbatim DVD disks are intended for data/media, not booting. (These disks have a movie film reel illustration on the front of the DVDs.)
Previously, I had noted your problem with the USB flashdrive too—in tandem with another such Verbatim DVD. Actually, that image on my Verbatim DVD then was supposed to be limited to net install (netinst) for a CD. (I was in a hurry and couldn’t locate my CDs.) I got a message that the «CD» was invalid. Anyway, the disk wouldn’t boot.
I then tried a Philips DVD-R (burned with same Gnome image as this latter Verbatim, burned just a few minutes before), and was then able to install that. Thus, I was able to format the / partition correctly as bootable beforehand in installation, too. The filesize of the iso and number of files on both disks were identical.
Moral: I made the mistake of using a DVD instead of a CD, for a CD image—and also using unsuitable media—which seems intended basically for data and entertainment content, not booting isos. It seems to me here that the media used does matter: Beware! (I need to learn to use thumbdrives correctly for this install function, also.)

Debootstrap error
#1
Post

Hello, I’m trying to install Debian for the first time and after getting to the «Install the base system» part I get a Debootstrap error. When I try to preform the installation I get the error «Failed to determine the codename for the release.». If it’s any help, I’m trying to do a Unetinboot install from a SanDisk Cruzer USB drive.
Thanks.

Don’t use Unetbootin. Use dd (Linux/UNIX) or win32 image writer (Windows) to directly write the ISO image to the USB device.

I ran into this same problem. I used unetbootin to create the image on a USB thumb drive.
unetbootin was not the problem. The problem was related to the media not being mounted under /cdrom
I had to manually mount the usb to /cdrom and when I retried the install, I was able to get past the «bootstrap error».
I did this by hitting alt-f2 and then
mount /dev/sdc1 /cdrom
then alt-f1 to get back to the install
The device for the usb drive may vary. For me it was /dev/sdc1.
I have no idea why the installer isn’t smart enough to know to either mount the install media in /cdrom itself of look for it in /target/media/cdrom where it already had it mounted.

Thank you very much for this answer, it helped me go through the installation !
I think the USB connection was dropped for some reason during the very very long cleaning process (LVM encrypted).

Thank you. This works perfectly. Must say that I’m surprised this hasn’t been fixed in the interim though!

am i to believe that the installer doesn’t know to identify that it is being installed via usb?

Garry. Stop throwing all that documentation at people. The problem was solved, and unetbootin was not the issue in this case. Just accept it and move on. Your latest post was redundant. You don’t need to defend your answer just because someone chooses to fix their issue in another way. Whatever works, works. Easy as that. You can never argue with results.

I had same problem installing jessie on a laptop, I’d left the installer alone for several hours and the cdrom had unmounted itself somehow. When I plugged it back in, it came up as sr1, instead of sr0. Then this error. Mounting the DVD to /cdrom fixed the issue.

The problem still exists on a Thinkpad x61 when installing jesse from USB written using Etchy. The workaround is effective, however, as a first-time linux installing user I find it _very_ annoying to have to deal with a such a problem in 2017!

Thanks so much!
This just happened to me with a USB stick I prepared using good old dd, so I think there is a bug in there.
Also +1 to it happening at some point during writing noise to the disk.

I got this error when installed from live CD with no internet.
my USB drive as mounted on /cdrom, dispite this I had the problem.
When connected with INTERNET, Installation proceeded. (But faced no root login, no display manager etc.)
Installing the new Kali Linux 2016 rolling release to the HDD via USB.
I made a bootable USB using Universal USB. Booted off the USB and selected «Graphical Install», I had an issue at the beginning with the install prompting that it cannot find the data in the CDROM, I pulled the USB and waited 30 seconds, plugged it in waited 30 seconds then plugged it in and it allowed me to continue through the install.
I enabled LVM and went through that whole process once it was done it went to the next step which is «Install the system» at this point I get the error
Debootstrap Error
Failed to determine the codename for the release
At this point I cannot go further in the installation. I went back to the «Debian installer menu» and executed a shell. With that shell I tried to mount the USB to /cdrom using «mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /cdrom» which I found on a Debian forum. I receive the following error «mounting /dev/sdb1 on /cdrom failed: no such file or directory» I then try to mkdir CDROM, but it states it already exists. sdb1 is my USB according to «mount»
I am not sure what to do at this point. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I had the same issue installing Kali Linux from USB. I tried to install the OS with the graphical install and the simple install. The latter worked without error. It went straight to the «installing the system» screen.
I’ve found some information on the USB Stick might be bad. For some people changing the USB stick helped. It did not help for me. I got the same error with 3 USB Sticks, and a HDD with 2TB space on it, with a boot partition of 100 GB.

I had multiple problems installing Kali including this one. So this is what I did:
I chose manual partition, selected the partition in which I was going to install the ext4 file system (/root) and I deleted all the data of the partition. It took longer than I expected to delete the data, but after that I went back, selected again that partition to install the system, the swap one (I never choose a /home directory since once of the nfts is enough to me) and everything worked like a charm.
That partition had a previous Linux installation, and I’m guessing that was what caused my problems until I deleted all the data.

This question is old but I just came across a working fix for this.
As it turns out, the issue was caused due to the USB drive being unmounted during the LVM setup process. It might’ve been a bad USB connector or USB drive.
There is a very easy fix for which you don’t even have to reboot or re-do any of the setup again.
- Press
esc
to enter the menu of the installer. - Select
Enter a shell
(or command prompt) - Run
fdisk -l
to find out the name and partition of your USB install drive - Run
mount /dev/sdc1 /cdrom
(replacesdc1
with your USB drive) - Run
exit
, then go back toInstall the base system
from the menu
It will continue to install as normal. All credits and thanks go to this guy

Debian Debootstrap Error was the message i got while installing Debian 8 on my HP Proliant DL380 G7. Trying several times, and failing with the same message almost every time: Debootstrap Error
Some times saying it was not a Debian Install CD-ROM. One user suggested that UNetbootin should be avoided when using bootable install USB. Or else you would end up with Debian Debootstrap Error. UNetbootin have worked just fine in the past, so I figured it should work fine this time too. However I have also installed Debian 8 in past with out any problems. But never on my “new” server. I almost went to the drastically step and downloaded Ubuntu. Just almost 😉
However another user suggested that the CD-Rom was not mounted. And that could be solved directly from the installer. Here is how you do it.
When the message appears, wither Debian Debootstrap Error or not valid CD-rom.
Hit Alt + F2 and then confirm with .
Type: mount /dev/sdc1 /cdrom
Hit Alt + F1 to return to the installer.
You should now be able to continue you Debian install.
This took me a while to get past, so please enjoy!
To download the latest Debian, always see their website at https://www.debian.org
Happy installing!

hdiutil convert -format UDRW -o debian-live-7.0.0-i386-xfce-desktop.img debian-live-7.0.0-i386-xfce-desktop.iso
dd if=./debian-live-7.0.0-i386-xfce-desktop.img.dmg of=/dev/rdisk1 bs=1m
Debootstrap

Debootstrap

Failure trying to run: chroot /target dpkg —force-depends —install
var/cashe/apt/archives/base-files_5_amd64.deb
var/cashe/apt/archives/base-passwd_3.5.20_amd64.deb —> Продолжить
Mar 11 18.09.25 debootstrap: dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting
Mar 11 18.09.25 syntax error: unknown user `root’ in statoverride file
Asus P5B, Core2Duo E4500, RAM Hynix 2x1Gb, Hitachi 320Gb, GeForce 8600 GT, DVD RW Asus.
